Transferring Fat Cells to the Face
Facial fat transfer is the process of transferring fat cells to the face. During this procedure, fat cells extracted from the abdomen, thighs, jowls, or buttocks are transferred to the face in order to restore volume to the face.
Facial fat transfer can contour the face, give volume to sunken areas like the cheeks, and in general restore the youthfulness of the face. It is a minimally invasive procedure with long-lasting results.
The transfer of fat cells to the face is also called autologous fat transfer, since the fat cells used have been extracted from the patient’s own body.
How Is a Facial Fat Transfer Performed?
There are three steps to a facial fat transfer. The first step is liposuction. During liposuction, Dr. Felice extracts excess stubborn fat cells from trouble areas of the body using a cannula. This process must be gentle in order to preserve the health of the cells.
Following this, Dr. Felice will purify the fat cells through centrifugation. This involves removal of dead and damaged fat cells, leaving the healthy cells for transfer. Keeping the cells healthy is vital, as this helps them connect to the blood supply in their new area and thrive.
In the final step, Dr. Felice injects these healthy harvested fat cells into the targeted areas of the face. Doing this restores volume, reduces wrinkles, and takes care of hollow regions.
The most common areas that are treated using facial fat transfer include the cheeks, the neck, between the eyebrows, under the eyes, around the nose, and in between the nose and the upper lip.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for a Facial Fat Transfer?
Any individual who is above the age of 18 and in good health may be an ideal candidate for the facial fat transfer. Having excess fat to transfer is key.
Essentially, facial fat transfers are one of the safest cosmetic procedures, since the body’s own fat cells are being used, which reduces the chances of rejection or allergic reactions. It is important to disclose your entire medical history to Dr. Felice during your consultation in order to rule out any complications. You should also bring up any allergies you may have.
What Can I Expect After the Fat Transfer?
Immediately after the facial fat transfer, you are likely to notice some slight swelling and bruising around the areas that have been treated. This is a temporary side-effect of the procedure and is likely to subside within a couple of days.
Since this is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the body’s own fat cells, the downtime is minimal. Most patients can resume their normal activities within a day or two. Results are visible almost immediately.
The results can also be quite long-lasting, especially compared to other dermal fillers. Most other fillers only last for six months to a year. This is one of the biggest advantages of the facial fat transfer.
