A new study has been published that refutes the old rule of eating 5 fruits and vegetables per day. The new rules? Eat 8!

A study of over 300,000 European men and women showed that those who ate at least 8 fruits and vegetables per day had a 22% lower risk of dying from heart disease compared to those who ate only 3 per day. Since heart disease is the leading cause of death here in the US and all over the world, this is worth paying attention to!

For each additional serving of fruits or vegetables beyond a baseline of three per day, your risk lowers by 4%. Example: an 80 gram serving of fruit or vegetables would be one small banana, a small apple or a carrot.

So, it appears that Mom was right: Eat your fruit and veggies!
